Yes, the dollar is sinking, but at the Plastik 10 event, you could Bargain and stretch those Benjamins. Fashionistas and Recessionistas alike were able to Snatch up last season's clothing and get a Sneak peak on spring collections.
Runway, Schrunway
After walking through what I dubbed a secret alley-way leading up to a Boardwalk Canopied with trees , this random outdoor and indoor venue first lead to an area of arts and crafts for kids who might not be ecstatic about Tel Aviv's fashion showcase. Adjacent to the play section, there was a small area with vendors Showcasing loose Fitted striped shirts, Sweatshirts, and graphic t-shirts with sayings such as progressive "Fuck Art."
Bargaining Basement
Inside the building, the room burst with almost a Dozen clothing and jewelry vendors, and most importantly , a full sized bar at the rear of the room. Although designers were Showcasing the spring collections, a lot of winter items were available on clearance. The average price was around 170 shekels for a sweater-like article of clothing (around $ 50, depending on how bad the dollar is sinking).
Like most of the fashion in Tel Aviv, the clothes were a Hodge-Podge of strange fabrics and prints sewn to form Asymmetrical dresses and shirts (I think some critics use the adjective trendy for these pieces). However, there was clothing incorporating Sporadic fresh designs in neutral colors made from soft, cotton-blended fabrics and something made by designers such as "Rock or Die" or "The Dressing Room." The pricing was also a Hodge-Podge of anywhere from around 150 shekels to 300 shekels depending on the item.
The jewelry Showcased by each vendor was truly unique. There was everything from sterling silver Star of David pieces, or necklaces made from different fabrics with metal Clasps. Although beautiful, the jewelry was familiar looking in that similar jewelry pieces could be found at any of the weekend outdoor markets or Boutiques throughout Tel Aviv. Pricing was pretty standard: around 80-100 shekels for a ring, and anywhere from 150-200 + shekels for necklaces. Of course, the pricing depends on the designer and the value of the jewels and metals used to create each piece.
Sit tight and clear your Closets until Plastik 11 arrives.
